Clay Baker's Family Fishing -- About Us --
Mission
Teach a few kids to fly fish.
Why?
Anglers have a great reputation for being some of the nation’s most ardent conservationists. When you’ve had a good time fishing you want to know that you can always count on that stream, river or lake being there to enjoy in the future. Being intimately connected with the well-being of a watershed instantly converts people into conservationists. Often the problems of a species of fish or a watershed are just so much distant tragedy that doesn’t really affect you; it’s all just another sad story on page 12 of the morning news. But when you hear about a problem on a stream that you actively fish we’re confident you’ll want to get involved and become part of the solution. We believe that the by-product of children learning fly fishing will be a new generation of conservationists who will proactively work to conserve, protect and restore North America’s fisheries and their watersheds.
How?
The most powerful tool we have is education. Making that education fun will help the word spread like a wildfire. And when kids and their parents realize that they can also teach others to fly fish, the message will spread even faster. In the spirit of public education we are offering as much education as we can completely free. At times we may charge for some of the items on the site in order to defray our costs or to help grow this site and continue our mission.
There is a lot behind those seven simple words in our mission. We want to TEACH fly fishing, so that individuals can get out on the water and start having fun on their own. No special arrangements just do it. By stating A FEW we have committed to a never ending procession of individuals and small groups. Traditionally a men’s only club we specifically want to get KIDS involved. The power of teaching kids is the ability to attract the rest of the family to the sport. We call this the X-Factor. At some point the kid’s will need mom and dad’s help. Maybe we can get some other siblings and even grandpa and grandma involved; pretty soon teaching that one child has turned into a 4X or 6X factor of success. Fly fishing is a great family activity and we want to see more families enjoying this sport together. Aside from a personal obsession with fly fishing, we chose FLY FISHING as the focus because of the unique relationship that a fly fishing angler develops with the environment. All forms of fishing require you to know something about the water, food and fish habits; but fly fishing puts the angler in more intimate contact with the fish and the water. Rarely does an angler pull on waders, stand in the middle of a flowing stream and plunk down a worm with a red and white bobber. Fly fishing anglers learn to study the currents, the individual insect hatches, the behaviors of fish and the way water conditions and quality effect the health of a fish population. Besides, fly fishing is not sedentary; it’s an active, dynamic sport that anyone can do for a lifetime. If your vision of fishing is Huck Finn sleeping by the riverside, waiting for a fish to bite do we have a surprise for you!
Please, come join the fun. Get your kids involved, get yourself involved and then drag a neighbor’s kid along to
have some fun with you.
