Sometimes people get hung up on rods, reels and clothing, but you can have terrible clothing and a rod and reel that barely work and still catch fish. The key to a great day fishing is to have the right flies for the right conditions. Sometimes you it's hard to find the right fly at the local fly shop, so you just have to tie your own. One of my favorite patterns is one that I created called the Simple Streamer. This fly works well for bass and panfish. I haven't had the chance to try this fly on trout but I'm sure it will work just as well for them. Here is the recipe and tying instructions for this streamer:
The Simple Streamer
Hook: standard wet fly hook Size 6-8
Body: yellow floss
Wings: Squirrel tail
Head: Peacock herl
- start thread
- wrap floss
- tie on bundle of squirrel tail about 2 inches long
- wrap peacock herl on top of the wraps that hold the squirrel tail
- whip finish
This fly was one of the first patterns that I tied and it has also been my most successful one. Try fishing this fly at the inlet of a small stream into a bass pond or lake. Also fish it one to two feet deep.
Have fun fishing this on your favorite lake!
